16 Months Without Shampoo
In January 2018, I stopped using shampoo and switched to the “no-poo” method, and for sixteen months, I lived completely shampoo-free! It was glorious to not have to think about washing my hair, and my hair was super strong, healthy, and full of body and bounce. If you want to read more about my initial decision to go “no-poo” and how to make the switch successfully, read this post!
If No-Poo Was Working So Well, What Changed?
One month ago, I had to make the decision to start using shampoo again due to health issues dramatically affecting my hair. Because my body has been going through extreme stress and a massive detox, my hair’s health has rapidly declined. My hair began falling out, was full of dandruff, and was not healthy, and I stopped wearing my hair loose and down around my shoulders because it did not look nice at all.
The simple apple cider vinegar rinse that I was occasionally using to cleanse my hair from the hard water where I live was no longer effective, even though it had worked beautifully for over a year! I went from rinsing my hair with apple cider vinegar every two weeks, to once a week, to every other day, and still, my hair was not healthy and looked dirty.
The next two pictures show what my hair looked like when I decided I needed to start using a shampoo to boost my hair health.
Why was the detox effecting my hair so much?
When the body goes through a detox, the body is trying to get rid of as many toxins and foreign material as it can through organs like the liver, lymphatic system, and skin. For example, in an infrared sauna, the sweat that the body produces is heavier and much thicker than the typical sweat that occurs on a hot day or during a workout, and this occurs because the sweat produced in the sauna is full of toxins, heavy metals, and other harmful materials.
Because the skin is the largest organ of the body and is full of sweat glands that are the major centers for pushing out toxins, my scalp and hair was severely effected. If you are wondering how to know if detoxing is affecting your personal hair health, some signs of detox include the following:
- Sticky, matted, clumpy, or stringy hair
- Brittle and dry hair filled with split-ends
- Oily scalp
- Dandruff and and itchy scalp
I was experiencing a combination of all of the previously mentioned symptoms, and if you are experiencing these symptoms too, it might be time to consider changing up your hair care routine like I did.
What Shampoo and Hair Care Line?
Because I am a Wellness Advocate for dōTERRA, I decided to give the dōTERRA shampoo line a try and see what effect it had on my hair health. I began using the shampoo, conditioner, and root serum two weeks ago, and I saw a dramatic difference after the very first shampoo! The first night that I used dōTERRA’s hair products, I washed my hair with the shampoo, used the conditioner, and then, rubbed some of the root serum throughout my hair and on my scalp. I have shampooed my hair twice since the first shampoo, and I have used a little, tiny bit of the root serum every night to give my hair a jump start back to health.
These pictures show the tremendous improvement in my hair after using the shampoo three times, the conditioner once, and the root serum once a day in a two week period!
I absolutely love dōTERRA’s hair line, and I will definitely continue using these products! If you want to check out the product pages for these items, here is the direct link to the dōTERRA hair care line.
